The finalists will perform at the concert to compete for the prizes of each group.

Supported by the Hills Shire Council, the Sydney Hills Youth Orchestra is proudly hosts its first Young Musicians Contest 2020.
 


The Sydney Hills Youth Orchestra Young Musicians Contest 2020 is designed to foster the development of young local musicians by exposing them to a healthy competitive environment and allowing them to learn the general etiquette in music competitions, and to receive constructive comments from professional musicians judges. It will encourage young musicians initiative of learning, practising, and participating in music activities and enhance their capabilities in youth orchestras performance.

The contest is divided into three age groups: 
  • A: 11 years of age and under,
  • B: 12 to 14 years of age
  • C: 15 to 18 years of age
The Contest is in three stages:
  • Stage 1:
    Submit a video recording of your performance (A solo piece for any of the following orchestral instruments: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Percussion instruments, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double bass, with or without piano accompaniment.)

    Durations:

  • A:11 years of age and under - any length of time within 3 minutes ca.
  • B: 12 to 14 years of age - any length of time within 6 minutes ca.
  • C: 15 to 18 years of age - any length of time within 12 minutes ca.

  • Stage 2:
    Finals of each group will perform a  piece in a concert at the TLC Theatre Baulkham Hills High School on Friday 10 April 2020. Pieces written for solo instruments with or without piano accompaniment. Contestants will need to bring their own accompanists if wish to perform with the accompaniment.
    All finals will receive comment sheets from the judges, and a certificate awards.
    Three winners of each group, 1st prize, 2nd prize and 3rd prize, will be announced at the end of the concert, who will receive a scholarship of deduction for annual membership fee for 2021:

    Group A: $100, $50, $25
    Group B: $150, $100, $50
    Group C: $200, $150, $100

  • Stage 3:
    The first prize winner of group A will prepare and perform a new piece with the Sydney Hills Junior Orchestra in a concert at the Pioneer Theatre Castle Hill on Friday 11 September 2020.
    The first prize winner of group B will prepare and perform a new piece with the Sydney Hills Youth Orchestra in a concert at the Pioneer Theatre Castle Hill on Friday 11 September 2020.
    The first prize winner of group C will prepare and perform a new piece with the Western Sydney Orchestra in a concert at the TLC Theatre Baulkham Hills High School on Friday 2 October 2020.
     
Requirements:
  • Contestants must be currently living in the Western suburbs.
  • Be available to participate all rehearsals and perform in concerts stated above if chosen.
To Participate 
  • Complete an online application with your video recording and pay the non-refundable entrance fee ($20 on or before 31 January 2020, early-bird deadline, or $30 by 31 March 2020, regular deadline).

UP COMING CONCERTS

JOIN THE SYS ORCHESTRAS

All revenues (membership fees, concert ticket sales etc.) will go towards The SCO Foundation to be used to promote new music of the contemporary composers.
 
Membership annual fee of  $600 (for 4 school terms) is asked of each member for the Sydney Hills Youth Orchestra (SHYO), and $500 for the Sydney Hills Junior Orchestra (SHJO).

The fee is calculated in 4 school terms blocks for all members (e.g. if you join from term 2 of the year, your membership will be extended to next year term 1).

For young musicians joining the SYS Orchestras will need fill up your online Membership Registration From and send a short video recording of your performance via WeTransfer.

  • You will be notified with payment instruction should your application successful via email.
  • Successful members will have a website login account to access the Members Zone to download music parts.
